Hiya, mina-san~! Shiani here, and I’m back with a recap of the UBC Anime Club’s latest venture… The Halloween Dance and Social~!!!
Brace yourself, it’s going to be one spooookyyyy night~ 8D
The night began with a Snack-and-Mingle for everyone to get to know each other. This is a social after all, am I right? (*´▽`*)
Throughout the Mingle, there was mystery a-brewing in the corner of the room… >:D
UBCAni’s dutiful Librarian is also secretly… a fortune-teller?! So many guests were interested in taking a peak at their futures! From what I saw, the predictions were so accurate that it was scary!! O A O)//
Near the end of the Snack and Mingle event, we also held a Raffle Draw for attendees, featuring gachapon prizes from our sponsor, Gacha Hobbies. (By the way, please check out their store on the top floor of Aberdeen Centre in Richmond! They have more than just gachapons, and members get 5% off when they present their membership card! 8D)
So while people were enjoying the food and meeting new people, their valuables were being dutifully watched by the Coat Check team: UBCAni’s Creative Director and Director of Communications! 8D
Our Creative Director was also the one that drew the Shiani signs that were seen around the event, including the one for AMS Safewalk and Campus Security contact numbers. While it may be a spooky night, we didn’t want anybody’s trip home from the event to be spooky, too! ; A ;” (Always remember to use the buddy system when walking home at night! <3 )
After the Snack and Mingle it was the Halloween-themed event of the night: Open Mic Horror Stories~!! :3
While there were many spooky tales told that night, my personal favourite has to be the one about the apartment complex ghost near Eagle Ridge Hospital! (Wait, isn’t that near where I live!? O A O!!)
Then there were those ghost stories from China and Korea…. And I know for a fact that my native Japan has pretty ghastly stories to tell, too. Holy moly, guys, did we really have such scary ancestors?! Q AQ;;;
After the Open Mic event, we had one of our most popular events of the night: our Cosplay Contest Walk-off! O w O
The contestants competed for two top prizes: Audience Choice and Judge’s Choice, with the judges being none other than UBCAni’s very own executives, who are also active members in the cosplay community.
The Audience Choice award went to the Haruka cosplayer (from Free! – Iwatobi Swim Club), winning him a $20 gift certificate for our sponsor, Half Moon.
The Judge’s Choice award went to the Loki and Thor cosplayers (from Marvel’s Avengers series), winning them a $30 gift certificate for our sponsor, Half Moon!
We also had one more SPECIAL award for those who didn’t participate in the cosplay walk-off… The UBCAni executives know that many hard-working cosplayers are often too shy to compete in walk-offs and cosplay contests, but we also wanted to reward them for their hard work. The execs worked hard scouting the event all night to find the BEST, handmade cosplay that was attending the event.
The award went to the Grotesque Romance Miku Hatsune cosplayer who attended the event. Not only did she create her own stunning wine-red gown, but she also paid close attention to the bloody details of this gruesome rendition of the beloved virtual pop idol. She won a bag of Japanese treats, including some delicious Pocky!
Congrats to all the winners! ^ w ^ If you competed and didn’t get a prize, please don’t feel down about it! It was a difficult decision to choose the winners, and we really wish we could’ve awarded ALL of you with a prize!
After the Cosplay Contest, now it was time to start the dance! >w<;;
While the executive team of UBCAni chose many of the songs, they were all remixed with several of his own selections by our DJ of the night, DJ ClockWorkGoods~! 8D Please like his Facebook page!
And that’s it for now, everyone~! Until next time! (We have a Bento Workshop coming up very soon with the UBC Cooking Club! We hope to see you there! 8D)
Jyaa~ne! <3
