Due to the current and ongoing global pandemic, we here at UBCAni understand the struggles we all face together this school year and we would like express our utmost gratitude for your continued love and support during these troubled times. Since club events for the foreseeable future will remain restricted to online platforms, we have decided to significantly reduce our standard membership fees for new, returning, and non-UBC members! Rest assured that our exec team will continue to strive to put these funds to good use in organizing events and activities to ensure the satisfaction of our valued members.

New UBC Student Membership: $5.00

Returning UBC Student Membership: $4.00

New General Membership: $7.50

Returning General Membership: $6.00

As we are unable to accept membership fees in person this year, we will be accepting them through e-transfer. After filling out this form: UBCAni membership form, please e-transfer the corresponding fee to ubcani@gmail.com. After we have confirmed your payment, we will send you a confirmation e-mail with your membership number. More detailed information can be found on the google form itself. Please note that this may take a few days as our club has a lot of members.

If you are unable to pay through e-transfer, we also accept alternative methods like Paypal. Please don’t hesitate to email us at ubcani@gmail.com or message us on Discord or Facebook if you have any questions or require our assistance in any way.

Why become a member of this amazing club you ask? Well, aside from the tons of fun and friendships you will undoubtedly have and gain throughout the year, our various membership perks still hold true, despite the ongoing Corona-pocalypse, and may provide further incentive in joining our wonderfully weird family here at UBCAni. UBCAni Virtual Icebreaker 2020-2021!

To kick off the new school year, we are pleased to announce our annual UBC Anime Club icebreaker event!!! Join us on our Discord server for 2 whole nights of anime-themed games and fun! This year we’ll be hosting our icebreaker online on our club’s Discord server over two evenings on Friday, September 25th and Saturday, September 26th. Please RSVP to our Facebook event for an additional raffle ticket by 11:59pm on Thursday, September 24th and press going!

General Itinerary (please note that all times are PST)

Friday, September 25th
6:45pm VC in talk and chill with executives to get to know the club more
7:00pm Intros and video
7:30pm *UBC Anime Club “awards” (kinda like waifu wars but with a twist)
8:30pm Anime based team trivia. Favorites such as Um, Actually and others!
9:30pm A screening of Makoto Shinkai’s Kimi No Na Wa
Saturday, September 26th
7:00pm Intros again for anyone who missed the first night
7:30pm Are you funnier Than a UBCAni Exec?
8:30pm Jackbox. Go to https://jackbox.tv/ in your browser and enter the code in the stream to join in
9:15pm Mafia. We will be holding this via https://mafia.gg/
10pm A screening of studio Madhouse’s masterpiece Redline

What are the UBCAni “Awards”?
Think the Crunchyroll Anime Awards, but the people’s vote is the only one that actually matters, contestants pitted against the next revealed contestant one after the other until one rises above the rest, king of the hill style. Will your waifu make it through all the rounds to win the awards? Vote to ensure victory, and debate is highly encouraged- the saltier, the better.

What is “Are You Funnier Than a UBCAni Exec?”
Adapted from Jacksfilms’s YIAY Live series with the same title, think Cards Against Humanity but all the cards are fill-in and the audience are the voters of the funniest answer- least funny is eliminated each round. Respond to weeb-related prompts with the funniest answers you can think of and face off against the host. May the funniest weeb win!

Prizing

This year we are holding a member-exclusive raffle where the grand prize is an EXQ Rimuru Tempest figure!

UBCAni Activities in 2020

Despite the insanity of the last few months, UBC Anime Club is determined to continue on with weekly weeby activities, and the newsletter alongside that. We’ll be using Discord as our main platform for all online activities, so be sure to join if you haven’t already, and weeklies take place every Friday from 7:00PM to 10:00PM or later. Updates on what we’ll be doing each week will come through our Facebook group and #events channel in Discord. Give yourself the activities role in our Discord server by typing:

.iam events

to get notified and pinged when we start and other related announcements. The weekly online activitiy will take place from 7:00PM-9:00PM.

Artist meetups in the form of remote Drawpiles are still happening, starting from 9:00PM Fridays! Check the pinned post in the Artist Facebook group or the #art-discussion channel in our Discord server for pings, updates, and our finished canvases (also found in our website’s gallery)! Don’t know what Drawpile is? Find out more and a tutorial here. Give yourself the “artist” role in our Discord server by typing:

Weekly anime showings are also still happening and also starting from 9:00PM, streamed through our Discord. Shows are hand picked each week by our librarian for you to enjoy. Give yourself the “viewings” role in our Discord server by typing:

This Week’s online Activity: Jackbox

After last week’s successful trial run of Skribblio, we will be running Jackbox games such as Tee K.O., Trivia Murder Party 2, Push the Button, Patently Stupid, and other games from Jackbox 5 and 6! Once again, for specifics on joining the game, please watch our Discord’s #events channel or our Facebook group and join the events role!

Schedule:
7:00 – 9:00PM: Jackbox Games
9:00 – 10:00PM: Showings
9:00 onwards: Artist meetup Drawpile

As we’re reviving our weekly newsletter (sign up for it here) for our online club activities, with fewer events we have more newsletter real estate to fill. Do you have an anime-related artwork, cosplay, video, or any kind of content you’ve made and are proud of? Email us, or contact us either through our Facebook page or @exec on Discord to submit your work and social media links so we can feature you!

Thank you for another year.

On behalf of the 2019 executive team we would like to congratulate you on finishing finals and the conclusion of another academic term. With this comes a goodbye as well from the 2019-2020 executive team. We would like to thank you for the wonderful year, from heroes and villains at Halloween, icing gingerbread men at Christmas, finding your knight at Valentine’s (via otome game style) and finally the wonderful memories from our weekly events.

We would like to thank each member of the 2019-2020 executive team for their hard work, creativity and time. We would also like to thank every volunteer and everyone who made it possible. With that, we wish you all well and welcome the new 2020-2021 executive team.
